Reading Inset Plans

Our Inset will be focussing on Reading and the rough outline of our agenda is below - a lot to think about as you will see!

Why are we focussing on reading?
Aims:
Know expectations of new curriculum
Implications for Reading at Bitterne Manor Primary
Share results for EYFS; KS1 and KS2

Walk of the school
What are we currently doing for Reading at BMPS?
- focus teaching and learning of AND to promote enjoyment
Take post-it notes around to ‘capture’ evidence
Share feedback from each group – record under T&L; Enjoyment

Share new curriculum expectations
What does this mean for BMPS? In groups discuss and share
So what are our next steps? (Can think big!)

Book Corner:
Promote reading for pleasure through book corner development
  • Each class have £50.00 (can add from class budget of you have any!)
  • Share some photos (also promote class reading book) – how do you want to promote ‘love’ for reading?
  • Time to talk and plan with team
  • Share and feedback
  • Bitterne Manor Book Days
World Book Day
3 days promoting enjoyment
  • Assembly on Wednesday to launch
  • Must have a book to inspire reading and writing activities

Teaching and Learning of Reading – what does it look like across the school?
How do we evidence ‘pleasure’ for reading?
What are we doing the same? What needs to be consistent?
How do we make guided reading manageable?
Teaching & Learning of Reading
Plan guided reading sessions - including bank of activities to capture evidence – tablet; sticky labels; follow up tasks etc
Action plan for peer to peer support over Spring 2
Each group share their planning and action plan
Come back and review this in KS meeting in week 3 and staff meeting

· Record readers on curriculum map

Shed loads of ideas...

We've been browsing around for ideas and inspiration and came across the 'Sheds'. We've added a link on the right - and another to some fantastic food for thought here.

Learning Behaviours - first draft

We've been trying to summarise our values in the form of a code.. Here's a first draft from the views we've collected from all the classes so far.

Target Tracker 15.2 updated...

Looks like some interesting updates for TT in the next release... We like the addition of photo observations in the EYFS!

KS2 Writing Moderation Feedback

Some feedback from the KS2 writing moderators:

Strengths across KS2 writing in general:
  • Positive approach to moderation
  • Good preparation
  • Professional dialogue
  • Pride in writing
  • Evidence of editing process strengthening writing
  • Purposeful cross curricular writing
Points to consider:
  • Clear differential between moderation and standardisation
  • GPAS informing composition and effect
  • Independence and Choice - all abilities doing same task?
  • Adaptation of planning to meet needs of cohort?
  • Developing the planning, editing, drafting process...
Areas I think we need to look at with the more able in mind:

Effective writing from a rich stimulus - can some tasks inhibit pupils from achieving higher levels?
Opportunities for extended periods - over a morning or afternoon or linked sessions?
more ambitious vocabulary - linked to SPAG
writers controlling sentences with readers in mind
Publishing - opportunities to do this in various ways with a clear purpose
Better links with texts as models for writing - links to reading 'pleasure' and having opinions (justifiable!) on what makes it good or not.
It was mentioned about a 'writing' culture - links to our learning values and very much to our thoughts on reading. I like this idea as it links with the celebration, publishing and models of good writing.
Something to consider - would we call ourselves writers...?
